The Motorola Backflip is everything you could want as an iPhone alternative with a couple correctable caveats.
Hardware Review
The familiar candy-bar shape fits well in my wife's petite hands without being inconvenient for my larger hands. The "Backflip" keyboard not only increases this comfort, but provides a great location for the camera to deliver forward-facing pictures. Despite the QWERTY's unique exterior location, the keyboard is holding up well so far and appears to be quite durable (I would expect to see this style of keyboard on more phones in the future) The screen's display features vibrant colors and hasn't easily scratched yet. The touch screen is quite sensitive, and will be quite handy once Android 2.1 is delivered (multitouch gestures). As for using the on-screen keyboard, it compares extremely well to the iPhone and is FAR from the poor attempt made by Blackberry's Bold. With the highly versatile and easy to navigate touch screen interface, the newly added touch pad gets easily trumped despite its smooth/easy-to-use functionality. Lastly, the case features the new industry standard micro USB charging port, which removes the need for buying a different charging device for each phone (finally!).
Software Review
The open source Android operating system is a dream come true and the Backflip comes preloaded with version 1.5 w/Motoblur. Version 1.5 provides a robust and clean interface that makes managing your contacts and schedule a breeze and suffers from only minor delays in performance-intensive applications. Web browsing is also quite fast but could be enhanced with iPhone-styled gestures. Unfortunately, AT&T has temporarily crippled this beautiful creation by limiting which applications can be installed to only their trusted source (Apps Store a la Apple). In addition to the application issues, the default search engine has been set to Yahoo in order to "give customers an alternative." Although this is thoughtful, I'd much rather prefer functionality over a second class search engine.
As for the Motoblur service, the software is quite handy and allows "social butterflies" to share every moment of their lives with ease on nearly any platform currently available (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Unfortunately, use of this service prioritizes convenience over privacy and security. According to Motoblur's current Term's of Service, by using their service you are giving up "the unlimited, free, worldwide, nonexclusive, irrevocable and perpetual permission to use, modify, copy, distribute and display [your] User Content in connection with the Services; and to publish your name and other personally identifiable information in connection with such User Content." In other words, say goodbye to your privacy and say hello to a new "pot of gold" for hackers.
Despite these huge inherent flaws, Motorola has promised to deliver Android version 2.1 to the Backflip in the near future, which provides AT&T & Motorola a great opportunity to correct this phone's issues. With the iPhone exclusivity agreement possibly coming to an end this April, hopefully AT&T gets their act together because customers aren't hanging around for the cheap phone plans...
Overall Review
The Motorola Backflip is a breath of fresh air to AT&T customers. It's solid design and nearly limitless potential makes this the perfect iPhone alternative.
